It all started when a poor boy and a prince tradeD places.

Set in England during the 1500s, The Prince and the Pauper introduces us to the contrast between life for the poor and life for royalty. It is a classic adventure tale that sweeps you up in an exciting journey filled with villains, princesses, dungeons, and characters from all walks of life. To enrich your understanding of the Tudor setting, have your students participate in SPY WEEK: Tudor Edition just before reading the play and novel.

After reading this play, children can flex their story-based reading, writing and math skills by using the Prince and the Pauper Skills Book. One of the greatest benefits of Prince and the Pauper is that it makes children want to read more and more. In addition to reading the original Prince and the Pauper novel by Mark Twain, many students want to read more about the fascinating members of the Tudor family: Princess Elizabeth (future Queen Elizabeth I), Princess Mary (future “Bloody Mary”), Lady Jane Grey (the “Nine Days Queen”), Edward the VIII, and of course, King Henry the VIII so check out the Tudor Reading List here. .
